The Star FAQs

The Star has partnered with Axate to give you complete control over your digital news experience.

The new system allows you to read articles as and when you want, without having to pay for a whole month’s subscription. Each article is just 25c, but if you pay for two articles in a day, you can read for free for the rest of the day. That means you’ll never pay more than $0.50 per day. If you love the Star and read every day, we still offer a subscription option that gives you the best value for money.

  • It works like a pay as you go phone:  you add a bit of money to your account, and then use it to pay for read premium articles, as and when you want to read them.

Each premium article you read on The Star costs 75c, but if you pay for 2 premium articles in a day, you can read as many premium articles as you like and you won't pay again for the rest of that day. That means you'll never spend more than $1.50 per day.  Once you've paid to read an article, you don't pay again for that article.

You don't have to spend any money if you don't want to.  There is no minimum weekly or monthly spend. If you don't read any premium articles, you won't be charged anything.

You control when you add more money. You also choose when to add more money to your Axate account. If you have a balance of $0, you can leave it like that for as long as you like. You only need to add more money if you want to read a premium article.

  • Yes. Axate does not handle your payment details - we use Braintree and PayPal to process payments, so you know your payment details are secure. If you have any concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

  • We want to make sure you know exactly what’s happening at all points. You can choose whether or not to actively authorize each payment, or you can pre-approve all payments, depending on your personal preferences and spending limits.
Want less interruption? Click “enable automatic payments" and we'll automatically charge your Axate wallet for future articles.

Your selection doesn’t apply to how often you add more money to your Pay as You Go account - that always remains in your control.

If you prefer to be asked each time you view a chargeable article, click “Read now."

You can update these settings in your Axate account pages.

  • You can upload as little as $1 into your wallet. If you don’t like it, you can cancel within 14 days and you’ll get a full refund of your unspent balance. When your wallet runs low, you decide how much to top up. If you don’t spend anything your wallet stays at the same balance.
